Series: The Singing Hills Cycle #4
Genre: Fantasy
Publisher: Tordotcom Publishing
Pages: 128
Publication date: September 12, 2023

The wandering Cleric Chih returns home to the Singing Hills Abbey for the first time in almost three years, to be met with both joy and sorrow. Their mentor, Cleric Thien, has died, and rests among the archivists and storytellers of the storied abbey. But not everyone is prepared to leave them to their rest.

Because Cleric Thien was once the patriarch of Coh clan of Northern Bell Pass–and now their granddaughters have arrived on the backs of royal mammoths, demanding their grandfather’s body for burial. Chih must somehow balance honoring their mentor’s chosen life while keeping the sisters from the north from storming the gates and destroying the history the clerics have worked so hard to preserve.

But as Chih and their neixin Almost Brilliant navigate the looming crisis, Myriad Virtues, Cleric Thien’s own beloved hoopoe companion, grieves her loss as only a being with perfect memory can, and her sorrow may be more powerful than anyone could anticipate. . .

I just love this world so much???

I actually cried a little bit while reading Mammoths at the Gates. It was a short novella that, as usual, packed quite a punch. It dealt with grief and memories and remembering and those topics hit a bit too close to home this year. Continue reading

Series: The Radiant Emperor #2
Genre: Historical Fiction, Fantasy, LGBTQIA+
Publisher: Tor Books
Pages: 400
Publication date: August 22, 2023

How much would you give to win the world?

Zhu Yuanzhang, the Radiant King, is riding high after her victory that tore southern China from its Mongol masters. Now she burns with a new desire: to seize the throne and crown herself emperor.

But Zhu isn’t the only one with imperial ambitions. Her neighbor in the south, the courtesan Madam Zhang, wants the throne for her husband—and she’s strong enough to wipe Zhu off the map. To stay in the game, Zhu will have to gamble everything on a risky alliance with an old enemy: the talented but unstable eunuch general Ouyang, who has already sacrificed everything for a chance at revenge on his father’s killer, the Great Khan.

Unbeknownst to the southerners, a new contender is even closer to the throne. The scorned scholar Wang Baoxiang has maneuvered his way into the capital, and his lethal court games threaten to bring the empire to its knees. For Baoxiang also desires revenge: to become the most degenerate Great Khan in history—and in so doing, make a mockery of every value his Mongol warrior family loved more than him.

Content warnings provided by the author (highlight to read): self-harm, suicidal ideation, marital rape, pregnancy loss, drowning, torture (not overly graphic), child harm and death (young teen), internalised homophobia, ableist language.

I was so excited and also very nervous to pick up He Who Drowned the World?? I loved loved loved the previous book and was afraid this sequel wasn’t going to measure up, but Shelley Parker-Chan did such amazing things with this novel that all I want to do is lie down in a puddle of my own feelings. Best Reads of 2023/1

Hi! I’m alive \o/

Things got a bit rough in real life the past few months; blogging had to be put in the back-burner despite the fact I was, and am, still reading lots of books! I’m not sure how regularly I’ll post here since things continue to be a bit of a mess? But I thought it’d be fun to share my best 2023 reads (so far)! Here they are, in no particular order:

And stepping through those doors exacts a price.

Surely it must be a coincidence that this happened just as Nathaniel and Elisabeth started getting closer to one another…?

18189606Big Bad by Lily Anderson

Aspiring supervillains (and super nerds) Jonathan and Andrew attempt to hold their own in a town full of monsters, while three-hundred-year-old vengeance demon Anya is just looking for something to give her life purpose again, spending her days working at an evil juice bar. He’s a librarian when the town’s budget can afford him, a good friend, kind neighbor, and also, a witch. And while that’s of no concern to anyone around him, there are others, non-humans, who have a vested interest in Xander’s family land. Xander knows something dark and dangerous is brewing. He’s just not quite sure what. And that’s not the only mystery he’s dealing with. The new chief of police is, by turns, giving him heart palpitations and homicidal thoughts.

30095464Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant

Seven years ago, the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a “mockumentary” bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy.

Now, a new crew has been assembled. But this time they’re not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life’s work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

25733660The Deep by Rivers Solomony

Yetu remembers for everyone, and the memories, painful and wonderful, traumatic and terrible and miraculous, are destroying her. And so, she flees to the surface, escaping the memories, the expectations, and the responsibilities—and discovers a world her people left behind long ago.

31145148The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

Three terrible things happen in a single day. Essun, a woman living an ordinary life in a small town, comes home to find that her husband has brutally murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter. Meanwhile, mighty Sanze — the world-spanning empire whose innovations have been civilization’s bedrock for a thousand years — collapses as most of its citizens are murdered to serve a madman’s vengeance. And worst of all, across the heart of the vast continent known as the Stillness, a great red rift has been torn into the heart of the earth, spewing ash enough to darken the sky for years. Or centuries.

22840421The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

Though she has risen to the position of lady-in-waiting, she is loyal to a hidden society of mages. Ead keeps a watchful eye on Sabran, secretly protecting her with forbidden magic. Across the dark sea, Tané has trained to be a dragonrider since she was a child, but is forced to make a choice that could see her life unravel.

30233110The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules…with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos pretending to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously. But someone does. An unexpected message arrives, begging her to travel to the remote and mysterious Nowhere House to teach three young witches how to control their magic.

18189606All Systems Red by Martha Wells

In a corporate-dominated space-faring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. For their own safety, exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists is conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid–a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.”

27883214Written in Red by Anne Bishop

Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard—a business district operated by the Others. Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job.

23299512The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri

Imprisoned by her dictator brother, Malini spends her days in isolation in the Hirana: an ancient temple that was once the source of the powerful, magical deathless waters — but is now little more than a decaying ruin. Priya is a maidservant, one among several who make the treacherous journey to the top of the Hirana every night to clean Malini’s chambers. She is happy to be an anonymous drudge, so long as it keeps anyone from guessing the dangerous secret she hides.

24485589A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

The case is closed. Five years ago, schoolgirl Andie Bell was murdered by Sal Singh. The police know he did it. Everyone in town knows he did it. But having grown up in the same small town that was consumed by the murder, Pippa Fitz-Amobi isn’t so sure. When she chooses the case as the topic for her final year project, she starts to uncover secrets that someone in town desperately wants to stay hidden. And if the real killer is still out there, how far will they go to keep Pip from the truth?

23592235Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

When two Niveus Private Academy students, Devon Richards and Chiamaka Adebayo, are selected to be part of the elite school’s senior class prefects, it looks like their year is off to an amazing start. After all, not only does it look great on college applications, but it officially puts each of them in the running for valedictorian, too. Shortly after the announcement is made, though, someone who goes by Aces begins using anonymous text messages to reveal secrets about the two of them that turn their lives upside down and threaten every aspect of their carefully planned futures.

30095464Promise Boys by Nick Brooks

The prestigious Urban Promise Prep school might look pristine on the outside, but deadly secrets lurk within. When the principal ends up murdered on school premises and the cops come sniffing around, a trio of students―J.B., Ramón, and Trey―emerge as the prime suspects. They had the means, they had the motive―and they may have had the murder weapon. But with all three maintaining their innocence, they must band together to track down the real killer before they are arrested. Or is the true culprit hiding among them?

25733660A Ferry of Bones & Gold by Hailey Turner

Patrick Collins is three years into a career as a special agent for the Supernatural Operations Agency when the gods come calling to collect a soul debt he owes them. Unable to walk away, Patrick finds himself once again facing off against mercenary magic users belonging to the Dominion Sect. Standing his ground alone has never been a winning option in Patrick’s experience, but it’s been years since he’s had a partner he could trust.

WWW Wednesday #265: starting the month with great reads!

wwwwed

Welcome to WWW Wednesday, a meme currently being hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. It’s a place for you to do a little update on what your reading plans are.

The Three W’s are:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

1. Honey & Spice by Bolu Babalola

Contemporary romance! I’m really enjoying this so far! The writing and the characters are super fun and the set up of Kiki and Malakai’s relationship has been really intriguing so far. I have no idea where this is going, but I do expect things to get messy lol

2. Disorientation by Elaine Hsieh Chou

Literary Fiction! So I don’t necessarily like the writing style here or the characters, but I’m so interested in the Xiao-Wen Chou mystery of it all??? I can’t wait to see how that’s going to unravel and what the consequences of it will be.

What did you recently finish reading?

    1. The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent: Fantasy Romance! I had way too high expectations and this didn’t meet them at all. It was a lukewarm read. Review to come!
    2. The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi: Fantasy! I just loved how magically weird this was. Review to come!

What do you think you’ll read next?

22840421The Three Dahlias by Katy Watson

I want a fun little mystery book and this seems like it’ll fit the bill.

n attendance: the VIP fans, staying at Aldermere; the fan club president turned convention organizer; the team behind the newest movie adaptation of Davenport’s books; the Davenport family themselves – and the three actresses famous for portraying Lettice’s 1930s detective, Dahlia Lively.

National treasure Rosalind King, from the original movies. TV Dahlia for thirteen seasons, Caro Hooper. And ex-child star Posy Starling, fresh out of the fame wilderness (and rehab) to take on the Dahlia mantle for the new movie.

Each actress has her own interpretation of the character – but this English summer weekend they will have to put aside their differences, as the crimes at Aldermere turns anything but cosy.

Witch King by Martha WellsʉϬ

Fantasy! I love Martha Wells’ Murderbot, so I’m pretty excited to dive into this book. It’s an Adult Fantasy novel that deals with demons and magic and I’m very curious to know how that translates with Wells’ writing. I’ve heard mixed things so far, but I have high hopes I’ll enjoy it 😀

WWW Wednesday #264: little time for reading

1. Seven Days in June by Tia Williams

Romance! Still at it and a little bit ahead of the book club schedule! I’m still enjoying this, though not quite as much as I hoped to. We’re really getting into the meat of things and all the past heartbreak, but there’s still so much book left lol I’m a little scared of what conflicts will crop up in the second half.

2. A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn

Historical Mystery! I’ve been seeing so many people talk about this series lately, so I decided to try the first book. I am… not a fan so far. The writing style isn’t really for me and I’m finding this extremely slow paced. I guess I expected more of a mystery investigation to happen? At least so far (40%). I do very much enjoy Veronica as a main character, though, and how confident and sure of herself she is.

What did you recently finish reading?

    1. After Dark with Roxie Clark by Brooke Lauren Davis: YA Mystery! Liked the ghost stories and family curse, but everyone was a huge idiot re the mystery plot.
    2. Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score: Romance! I had such a good time reading this. I mostly loved the humor and all of the characters, though Knox did frustrated me. Review to come!

What do you think you’ll read next?

I’m not entirely sure! I have some book mail that’s supposed to arrive this week, so I might pick up one of the new arrivals. 😀

WWW Wednesday #263: I am not a reader again

1. Bad Cree by Jessica Johns

Horror! I am almost done reading this book! I do very much love how all the horror elements are coming together, but the main characters frustrates me so much. I do hope she develops as a person during this final third? Otherwise, I won’t be having a good time…

2. Seven Days in June by Tia Williams

Romance! One of the Book Club picks I have for this month. I’m still at the very beginning since I’m trying to follow the schedule and I do very much enjoy the humor here! The writing style isn’t my favorite, though? With all the upper case to indicate emphasis when that could be done with italics…

What did you recently finish reading?

    1. Cold Blooded Liar by Karen Rose: Mystery! I had a good time reading this one and enjoyed the mystery. Didn’t care for the romance, though.Review to come!
    2. Untethered Sky by Fonda Lee: Fantasy! A solid novella, but I expected more from t than what I got. Review to come!

What do you think you’ll read next?

22840421After Dark with Roxie Clark by Brooke Lauren Davis

My TBR Jar pick for April!

Roxie Clark has seen more dead bodies than your average seventeen-year-old. As a member of the supposedly-cursed Clark family, most of her ancestors have met tragic ends, including her own mother. Instead of fearing the curse, however, Roxie has combined her flair for performance and her gruesome family history into a successful ghost tour. But her tour never covers the most recent body she’s seen-her sister Skylar’s boyfriend, Colin Riley, found murdered in a cornfield. A year after the murder, Roxie’s desperate to help Skylar find closure and start to heal. Instead, Skylar becomes fixated on finding the killer.
