Series: Callahan & McLane #1
Genre: Mystery
Publisher: Montlake Romance
Pages: 337
Release date: June 24th 2014

When eleven-year-old Henley Fairbanks is abducted on her way to school, the FBI doesn’t waste a moment, sending agents to scour the area and embedding Special Agent Ava McLane with the distraught family. In the eye of the storm is local detective Mason Callahan, who also happens to be related to Henley. To make matters worse for Mason, the kidnapping comes on the heels of the murder of his longtime confidential informant, and he’s been sidelined from the investigation. Now both he and Agent McLane are holed up in the Fairbanks’ home, along with Callahan’s ex-wife, Robin. Every second counts in a kidnapping case, and the stakes keep rising the longer Henley stays missing. As Ava and Mason struggle to hold the Fairbanks family together in their darkest hour, the two investigators find themselves more and more drawn to each other.

Vanished got me hooked right from the first chapter! I already knew Mason from my very brief attempt at trying to read the Bone Secrets series and it was wonderful reading about him as a fully realized POV character in this novel. Ava was also a great POV character and I really liked their relationship and how it slowly developed–although some romance/steamy scenes did feel out of place when considering what was going on with the plot. THE SEVEN SISTERS
Lucinda Riley

Series: The Seven Sisters #1
Genre: Romance, Historical
Publisher: Pan Books
Pages: 628
Release date: November 6th 2014

Maia D’ApliĂŠse and her five sisters gather together at their childhood home of ‘Atlantis’ – a fabulous, secluded castle situated on the shores of Lake Geneva – having been told that their beloved father, the elusive billionaire they call Pa Salt, has died.

Maia and her sisters were all adopted by him as babies and, discovering he has already been buried at sea, each of them is handed a tantalising clue to their true heritage – a clue which takes Maia across the world to a crumbling mansion in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Once there, she begins to put together the pieces of where her story began . . .

Eighty years earlier, in the Belle Epoque of Rio, 1927, Izabela Bonifacio’s father has aspirations for his daughter to marry into aristocracy. Meanwhile, architect Heitor da Silva Costa is working on a statue, to be called Christ the Redeemer, and will soon travel to Paris to find the right sculptor to complete his vision.

Izabela – passionate and longing to see the world – convinces her father to allow her to accompany him and his family to Europe before she is married. There, at Paul Landowski’s studio and in the heady, vibrant cafĂŠs of Montparnasse, she meets ambitious young sculptor Laurent Brouilly, and knows at once that her life will never be the same again.

“Never let fear decide your destiny.”

That was fast! The Seven Sisters was pretty easy to get into and the writing kept me engaged. The premise was intriguing and the way Riley went about developing was really well done. There are two interwoven stories in this novel, from different times, and the way they connect to each other and come together was touching and well written.

My absolute favorite thing in this was that Brazil was part of the setting, lol. It’s always such a pleasant surprise to see my country mentioned in foreign lit and Riley did a good job with portraying life and briefly touching on the power imbalance that still! exists in our society. And maybe more technical, but everyone’s names made me believe they really were Brazilian and the Brazilian portuguese in the novel was wonderful and always correct–sometimes authors don’t really understand naming conventions or pick Spanish names for Brazilian characters and they use Spanish words/sentences for dialogue. The Three W’s are:

What are you currently reading?

1. Protecting What’s Mine by Lucy Score

Romance! I’m in need to something lighthearted and fun and this seems to fit the bill. It’s pretty funny and cute so far and I’m looking forward to see how the relationship develops.

What did you recently finish reading?

    1. Bad Blood by John Carreyrou: True Crime! This was fucked up and super interesting.
    2. Bridged by Kendra Elliot: Mystery! Pretty fun read, though the progression of the relationship is still too fast for me.
    3. Smoke Bitten by Patricia Briggs: Urban Fantasy! Lovely installment in the series and expanded world-building! Also A+ relationship development.
    4. Slayer by Kiersten White: YA Paranormal! Started out fun, but bashes the universe and main character it relied on for marketing.
    5. Vengeance in Death by J.D. Robb: Mystery! Loved how personal the conflict was and the character development. Super rushed ending.
    6. Supernova by Marissa Meyer: Science Fiction! Super tense and action packed with great character development. Dropped some plot points, though.

What do you think you’ll read next?

22840421Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch

I made the mistake of buying all 3 books. I disliked the first one quite a bit, but not I still have 2 and 3 to read. So, let’s go.

After a brutal battle with the underworld that nearly destroyed him, Locke Lamora and his trusted sidekick, Jean, fled the island city of their birth and landed on the exotic shores of Tal Verrar to nurse their wounds. But even at this westernmost edge of civilization, they can’t rest for long—and they are soon back doing what they do best: stealing from the undeserving rich and pocketing the proceeds for themselves.

1. Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou

Nonfiction/True Crime! I’m always surprised at what humans can achieve if they show enough confidence and completely ignore issues are they crop up. This is a really interesting read so far and some bits are just??? crazy????

2. Bridged by Kendra Elliot

Mystery! I need some murder to take my mind off things being upsidedown in real life. I liked the first book quite a bit and I’m excited to see how the series progresses. So far, this installment has a really intriguing mystery and I’m liking the relationship pace between Ava and Mason.

What did you recently finish reading?

    1. The Nowhere Girls by Amy Reed: Young Adult! Fantastic novel with a diverse set of characters that deals with rape and challenges rape culture.
    2. Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff: Fantasy! So slow and boring. I loved the world-building. Could’ve done without the Chosen One plot and the happy ending.

As Elena soon discovers, dealing with her fellow captives is the least of her worries. In this prison, the real monsters carry the keys.

Through love, all is possible.

Okay so A House of Earth and Blood was a lot and I read it in a full day, so I’m still. processing. This was a really super entertaining and fun read and I did love the first few chapters and how they worked to establish some of the world-building. There was quite a lot of emotion packed in both the beginning and the end of the book and I do have to admit I cried pretty much through the entire final 15% of the story. But there was something about it that just… unsettled me? Didn’t quite work for me? Was underwhelming? I don’t know.

Despite this being a huge novel I did find the world-building to be not as developed as I hoped it would be? It was still an interesting world, but it kind of seemed like Maas set up the works in the beginning of the novel and then sort of forgot to develop it further. I had hoped to get to know more about the Houses and magic and everything, considering the title of the novel, and that really wasn’t explored all that much. Continue reading

What are you currently reading?

1. Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff

Fantasy! YES! I AM FINALLY! READING THIS! After months of avoiding spoilers, I have the book in my hands. I’m still at the very beginning, but I’m really liking it so far! It’s really action packed and I’m curious to see how everything will be solved.

What did you recently finish reading?

    1. Know My Name by Ella SummersChanel Miller: Nonfiction! Really powerful memoir about the aftermath of sexual assault and reclaiming your identity.
    2. House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas: Fantasy! Really entertaining, but the world-building should have been more developed. I cried a lot at the end.
    3. Virgin Flyer by Lucy Lennox: M/M Romance! Super cute and lighthearted novel with lovely characters.

What do you think you’ll read next?

22840421The Nowhere Girls by Amy Reed

I’m in need of some contemporary YA and this seems like it’s going to be really interesting and heartbreaking.

When Grace learns that Lucy Moynihan, the former occupant of her new home, was run out of town for having accused the popular guys at school of gang rape, she’s incensed that Lucy never had justice. For their own personal reasons, Rosina and Erin feel equally deeply about Lucy’s tragedy, so they form an anonymous group of girls at Prescott High to resist the sexist culture at their school, which includes boycotting sex of any kind with the male students.

Review: THE SHADOWS BETWEEN US by Tricia Levenseller

THE SHADOWS BETWEEN US
Tricia Levenseller

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
Publisher: Feiwel and Friends
Pages: 336
Release date: February 25th 2020

Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:

1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

“…I have barely even started.”

The Shadows Between Us was such a fun read! Alessandra, the main character, was totally unapologetic about who she was and what she wanted from people and out of life. It was such a refreshing perspective to have the narrator be so sure of themselves and their own wishes, especially with the added humor the author used to addressed those matters. It was very entertaining and that captured my attention right away.

The plot is pretty intriguing and tightly woven. I was able to figure out one of the twists quite early on, but the way Levenseller went about developing the story and the main mystery was still pretty satisfying. Although, as a standalone, I did wish a few moments were a bit more fleshed out. There were a few scenes towards that ending that could have had more impact if their build up throughout the novel had been developed/addressed a little more. Continue reading

The Three W’s are:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

1. Know My Name: A Memoir by Chanel Miller

Nonfiction! This is such such an emotional read, so I’m taking it little by little. Chanel Miller was known as Emily Doe in the Brock Turner case and in this book she reclaims her identity as she writers about her life, the assault, and how it’s all affected her.

2. House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

Fantasy! I will pretty much try to read anything Maas writes and this is no different. I really like the world-building in the beginning, but this are getting kind of wobbly? And Bryce is so so so so so annoying. I still have about 400 pages to go, though, so let’s see what happens!

What did you recently finish reading?

    1. Baptism of Fire by Andrzej Sapkowski: Fantasy! Nothing much happened aside from characters going from one place to the other? But Geralt got his name!
    2. The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller: YA Fantasy! Pretty solid standalone with great romance and aaaall the banter!
    3. A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones: Mystery! Not a good mystery book. The plot is all over the place and the humor is dismissive of some serious points.

What do you think you’ll read next?

22840421Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare

I’m not all that excited for another Shadowhunter series, but let’s see what happens.

Welcome to Edwardian London, a time of electric lights and long shadows, the celebration of artistic beauty and the wild pursuit of pleasure, with demons waiting in the dark. For years there has been peace in the Shadowhunter world. James and Lucie Herondale, children of the famous Will and Tessa, have grown up in an idyll with their loving friends and family, listening to stories of good defeating evil and love conquering all. But everything changes when the Blackthorn and Carstairs families come to London…and so does a remorseless and inescapable plague.
