Top 10 Tuesday: Books to Screen

t10

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Top Ten Tuesday is taking a break until August, so I’m picking my own themes.

Now that Game of Thrones is back to grace my screen and take over my life, I got Inspired. There are a lot of books-to-screen adaptations out there, even more so these past few years. Some are amazing, and some should never have seen the light of day 😛

Here are my absolute favorite Books to Screen (Movies & TV) Adaptations:

The Lord of The Rings by  J.R.R. Tolkien

By far my absolute favorite book-to-movie adaptation. This is the trilogy that really got me into the Fantasy genre and changed my life forever. The movies are dear to my heart, as my parents took me to see them when I was little, and we always rewatch it together around the New Year. Yay, LOTR ❤

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

My childhood in a picture! While some of the Harry Potter movies left a bit to be desired, it’s still one of my favorite adaptations. It capture the essence of J.K. Rowling’s books and gave me countless hours of entertainment. Another holiday rewatch for me and my family, as Harry Potter gives us all the Christmas-y feels.

Matilda by Roald Dahl

Legit my most watched movie… ever, hahaha 😀 Matilda is also another bit of my childhood that I still carry on into adulthood. This is such a darling book and movie adaptation that delivers such an important message. It is also the book that got me into reading aaaaall the boooooks.

A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin

What an unforeseen turn of events 😛 ASOIAF and Game of Thrones have pretty much taken over my life these past years. While the show has its ups and downs (and really lows, like season 5), it is still an amazing adaptation on itself. The deviations from the source are too many to name, but it continues to surprise me at every turn.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

I am so impressed with how faithful the Outlander tv series has been to the books. There is so much ground to cover, as all books are hella long, but the adaptation is beautiful and incredibly well-done. I’ll even say I love it a bit more than the books, at least from what I’ve seen of season 1 and 2.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman

I honestly have no words to describe the American Gods adaptation? Aside from saying it’s so freaking cool and EXTREMELY weird. I mean, honestly. It’s bizarre. I still love every single minute of it. Season 1 covered just the beginning of the book, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I’m still angry they erased Katniss and Peeta’s disabilities, whitewashed the movie, and decided to kill my favorite character in the adaptation, buuuuut… I have to say that The Hunger Games movies did a great job translating the horror and despair of the citizens of Panem. The criticism against media was also spot on, specially considering how the movie was promoted re: Team Peeta or Team Gale.

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

The Handmaid’s Tale is a hard book to read, which translates perfectly to the atmosphere of the show. The adaptation deviates from the book but doesn’t shy away from the horror, making this really hard to watch most of the time. It is still just as gripping as the book, and one of my favorite shows at the moment.

Band of Brothers by Stephen E. Ambrose

“In one of his last newsletters, Mike Ranney wrote: “In thinking back on the days of Easy Company, I’m treasuring my remark to a grandson who asked, ‘Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?’ ‘No,’ I answered, ‘but I served in a company of heroes.’”

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

The Big Little Lies adaptation was such a great surprise! It had a lot of big names involved, and it managed to do justice to the novel. It was emotional and true to the characters, even if it took some liberties on story-telling at times. The adaptation also wrapped the story in a few episodes, which really made this even better!

What are your favorite book adaptations? Any recommendations for me?

Matilda is still one of my favorite books/movies ever 😛 Game of Thrones is really good, for the most part, despite deviating from the books a lot. And Outlander manages to capture all the main plot points of the books and develop them in a really engaging way. I def recommend it! 😀

Loved HP and Matilda as well. Have not watched GOT yet- want to binge watch when it’s all done. I really want to watch American Gods by Neil Gaiman because the book was really, really good. And I loved reading Big Little Lies but I could have lived without the show, it was too showy typical HBO. 😀

Oh my god, binge-watching GoT is suuuuch a good idea. There are so many threads to follow that it’s def better to watch it all in one go instead of being like ‘but who is this person again?’ 😛 America Gods the show is SO!! WEIRD!! AND AMAZING 😀 but it covers v little of the book, at least so far. I def recommend it if you don’t mind weird stuff and show creators adding character-backstory and other scenes we never read about 😛
