Top 10 Tuesday: #DoNotWant

t10

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is: Things That Will Make Me Instantly NOT Want To Read A Book.

Some of these are more of a ‘rather not’ than outright hate for those kind of tropes. Others? Well, not so much. Overall, they will all make me less excited to pick up a book.

CHEATING

Do I even need to say anything? Just no.

DRAMATIC MISUNDERSTANDINGS

You know when something happens in a book that could be easily solved by the characters just talking to each other, but for some reason *coughs*drama*coughs* they don’t? And the situation drags on and on for half the book. Yes, I’m not about that.

LOVE TRIANGLES

Even when I wasn’t sick of this, I still didn’t like it much. To me, it always comes down to one question: Why love triangles when they can all just date each other?

MIND CONTROL

No. No, no, no, no. No. Just… there are so many consent issues wrapped with that, and they are usually not addressed? So just, no. Goodbye. I must go away and never return.

MMA FIGHTERS

The only violence I like is people fighting with swords or with their pet dragons. Thanks.

ROCK STARS

Another trope I read too much of. With the exception of one series, all books with rock stars in it are just a miss from me. The stories mostly sound all the same. After a while, that gets pretty boring.

STOCKHOLM SYNDROME

There are just way too many books out there about women who are kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery and, you guessed it, fall in love with their captors. Those kind of books are sold as being ‘dark’ and ‘gritty’ romance, but they’re just glorifying rape.

TERMINAL ILLNESS

This one is more for personal reasons. I can’t read about the subject without getting way too upset, so I tend to avoid it as much as I can. Sometimes, though, a character finding out they have a terminal illness turns out to be the big ~twist the author has planned for their books, so a few slip through the cracks. ):

TOURNAMENTS/GAMES/ARENAS/CONTESTS/COMPETITIONS

TRAGIC PASTS

Once again, I read way too many New Adult novels where people’s lives were basically one miserable event after the other, until they met that one person who made it all worth it. Please, no. We all need some happiness in our lives.

What are some #DoNoWant tropes for you? Any of the above?

I completely agree with you about Stockholm Syndrome in books. It’s one thing if it’s based on a true story and that actually happened, but it’s a completely different matter if the author is using it as a plot device to make two characters fall in love.

Yeees!!! And there are a lot of ‘dark’ romance books that use that as a catalyst for the heroine to meet/fall in love with the dude who kidnapped her. Just, no thank you.

Great list! I agree with a lot of these too especially cheating and love triangles made it on my list as well. I also LOVE the gif you used for Competitions/Tournaments etc. it describes everything perfectly! 🙂

I’m totally with you on the misunderstandings. What’s up with these stories where one person thinks they are going to be killed while the other just wants a new friend. Too much drama is not my thing. Love your list!!

I’m visiting from TTT and really enjoyed your list. Several of your items didn’t make my list, but surely should have! Cheating is definitely taboo for me, I want likable characters and there is nothing likable about that. I’m curious which series of rock stars characters is the exception for you. I haven’t read many that have rock stars in them, but do tend to be a glutton for punishment as far as cheesy books about famous actors falling in love…What can I say, I am weak!

Thank you!! Oh, the rock star series is Stage Dive by Kylie Scott. She’s great with humor, and her books always crack me up 😀
