SWEEP IN PEACE
Series: Innkeeper Chronicles #2
Genre: Urban Fantasy, Science Fiction
Release date: November 13th 2015
Dina DeMille doesn’t run your typical Bed and Breakfast. Her inn defies laws of physics, her fluffy dog is secretly a monster, and the only paying guest is a former Galactic tyrant with a price on her head. But the inn needs guests to thrive, and guests have been scarce, so when an Arbitrator shows up at Dina’s door and asks her to host a peace summit between three warring species, she jumps on the chance.
Unfortunately, for Dina, keeping the peace between Space Vampires, the Hope-Crushing Horde, and the devious Merchants of Baha-char is much easier said than done. On top of keeping her guests from murdering each other, she must find a chef, remodel the inn…and risk everything, even her life, to save the man she might fall in love with. But then it’s all in the day’s work for an Innkeeper…
We look forward to our next visit.
Sweep in Peace is an action-packed sequel that improves and expands on what we’ve seen in the first book. The world-building becomes more complex, the characters get more developed, and the plot is a lot more intricate than before. There are a lot of twists, turns, and Dina using her innkeeper magic to kick some butt.
Ilona Andrews brings more and more elements of Sci-Fi to this universe, which I still find a little weird but am slowly getting used to. The banter and funny dialogue is still there, although not as present this time around. There is also the introduction of some great new characters, as well as the return of some familiar ones.
Actually, if you’ve read and are familiar with Andrews’ The Edge series, you might recognize a few people that pop up along the story. Seeing as I haven’t read those books — the first one was actually a DNF from me —, all of those characters were new to me. That in no way had a negative impact in the story, and I was still able to enjoy the novel.
That said, I liked this a lot better than the first one! There’s a lot of action, and Dina continues to be an amazing narrator and main character. She is tested throughout the book, and each time she meets the obstacles in her path head on. Her no-nonsense attitude is still very much there, and it helps her a lot as the plot develops.
The plot actually becomes a lot more complex in this installment. There are a lot of secrets being kept, and with Dina hosting a peace summit where all three factions present hate and want to kill each other, things get a little complicated. It was a lot of fun reading about all of these new characters, and trying to figure out what was going on.
Once again, there’s very little romance! The focus is very much on all of the action plus on the intrigue and schemes that come along with the different factions staying at the inn. Andrews gives us just enough sweet to counter all of the fights and backstabbing.
In fact, that makes the ending all the better. It gives us a satisfying and sweet conclusion to a story that is engrossing until the very last page. Andrews does a great job at combining elements of Urban Fantasy with those of Sci-Fi, and I am sure the next installment will be just as good as this one. 🙂
