Top 10 Tuesday: Favorite Graphic Novels/Comics

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is: Favorite Graphic Novels/Comics.

I’m still kind of new at this whole Comics business, but in the few years I’ve been reading and buying trades I’ve come across a lot of amazing titles. I have a preference for non-superhero stuff, which will become really obvious when you see this list 😂 In fact, this kind of turned out to be a love letter to Image Comics, with a few additions, which I hope you don’t mind. Here are my picks:

31145148THE WICKED + THE DIVINE by Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie

Every ninety years, twelve gods incarnate as humans. They are loved. They are hated. In two years, they are dead. The team behind critically thermonuclear floor-fillers Young Avengers and PHONOGRAM reunite to start a new ongoing superhero fantasy. Welcome to THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, where gods are the ultimate pop stars. But remember: just because you’re immortal, doesn’t mean you’re going to live forever.

22840421SAGA by Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples

Saga is an epic space opera/fantasy comic book series created by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Fiona Staples, published monthly by Image Comics. The series is heavily influenced by Star Wars, and based on ideas Vaughan conceived both as a child and as a parent. It depicts two lovers from long-warring extraterrestrial races, Alana and Marko, fleeing authorities from both sides of a galactic war as they struggle to care for their newborn daughter, Hazel, who occasionally narrates the series.

30233110MONSTRESS by Marjorie Liu, Sana Takeda

Set in an alternate matriarchal 1900’s Asia, in a richly imagined world of art deco-inflected steam punk, MONSTRESS tells the story of a teenage girl who is struggling to survive the trauma of war, and who shares a mysterious psychic link with a monster of tremendous power, a connection that will transform them both and make them the target of both human and otherworldly powers.

18189606Black Magick by Greg Rucka, Nicola Scott

Detective Rowan Black works robbery/homicide for the Portsmouth PD, but her greatest mystery is the truth about herself…both who she has been, and who she will become. Yet there are others in Rowan’s world with very long memories, and the power that one person holds, another will always covet. A new gothic-noir ongoing series about legacy, destiny, redemption…and the price of magic.f

27883214VELVET by Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting, Elizabeth Breitweiser

From the bestselling creators of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” comes this smash-hit spy thriller with a unique new twist! When the world’s greatest secret agent is killed, all evidence points to Velvet Templeton, the personal secretary to the Director of the Agency. But Velvet’s got a dark secret buried in her past…because she’s also the most dangerous woman alive.

23299512KILL OR BE KILLED by Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, Elizabeth Breitweiser

The darkly twisted story of a young man forced to kill bad people, and how he struggles to keep his secret as it slowly begins to ruin his life and the lives of his friends and loved ones. Both a thriller and a deconstruction of vigilantism, KILL OR BE KILLED is unlike anything this award-winning team has done before.

24485589BLACK PANTHER (2016) by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Brian Stelfreeze

The indomitable will of Wakanda — the famed African nation known for its vast wealth, advanced technology and warrior traditions — has long been reflected in the will of its monarchs, the Black Panthers. But now the current Black Panther, T’Challa, finds that will tested by a superhuman terrorist group called The People that has sparked a violent uprising among the citizens of Wakanda. T’Challa knows the country must change to survive — the question is, will the Black Panther survive the change?

23592235YOUNG AVENGERS (2013) by Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Mike Norton

Legacy isn’t a dirty word…but it’s an irrelevant one. It’s not important what our parents did. It matters what WE do. Someone has to save the world. You’re someone. Do the math. The teen super hero comic for the 21st century, uniting Wiccan, Hulkling and Kate “Hawkeye” Bishop with Kid Loki, Marvel Boy and Ms. America. As a figure from Loki’s past emerges, Wiccan makes a horrible mistake that comes back to bite everyone on their communal posteriors. Fight scenes! Fake IDs! And plentiful feels!

30095464NIMONA by Noelle Stevensono

Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren’t the heroes everyone thinks they are.

25733660PREACHER by Garth Ennis, Steve Dillon

At first glance, the Reverend Jesse Custer doesn’t look like anyone special-just another small-town minister slowly losing his flock and his faith. But he’s about to come face-to-face with proof that God does indeed exist. Merging with a bizarre spiritual force called Genesis, Jesse now possesses the power of “the Word,” an ability to make people do whatever he utters. He begins a violent and riotous journey across the country in search of answers from the elusive deity.

What are your favorite comics? Have you read any of the above?

SAGA IS EVERYTHING!! I’m reading issues instead of trades, so I’m all caught up with the story 😛 Black Panther’s current run is 10/10, I’m sure you’ll love it when you get a chance to read it 😀

I have Preacher, Saga and Velvet on my list too! I wish I’d remembered Nimona, because that one was awesome. I can’t wait for my library holds of Black Panther, Monstress and The Wicked + The Divine to come in. I’m a fan of Image comics too, and most of my GN reads come from them.

Nimona is such a delight! I hope your library gets those soon. Black Panther’s current run is amazing, and Monstress and WicDiv are so so so so good! Yeah, Image comics gets my love because of the variety and non-superhero stuff. 😀
